See Ash & Stevelman, Inc., Creators of Lefaye Handbags AshStevelmanInc for information before February 1950. Corde' Bags were trendy for Spring 1950, as evidenced by a full page feature in the same February 1950 issue of "Handbags and Fashion Accessories," page 47, including this example from Lou Ash. The listing of this bag's maker as Lou Ash may point to a change in business name and/or ownership of this company June 1949 and February 1950. This may have resulted from the death of Paul Stevelman on May 29, 1949, mentioned in Betty Held's "Out of the Bag" gossip column included this news in "Handbag Buyer" June 1949, page 34. "Vivian Ash of Ash & Stevelman, became engaged to Melvin Levitt, on her birthday May 10. It was such a surprise that she hasn't had time to make wedding plans. Mr. Levitt is a lawyer, and Vivian assists her brother Lou Ash in the showroom. As we go to press we learn with sorrow of the death on May 29, of Paul Stevelman, a member of the firm of Ash & Stevelman. He leaves his widow Fanny, and two sons, Irwin and Harold." Corde Courts New Trends "EVEN THE satchel is now produced in style • conscious corde. This one, with chic handle detail and shell tab, comes in three sizes, with leather lining in largest. From Lou Ash. Black, brown, navy, gray and some colors." |
