Fishbein & Co., Inc.
"Handbag Buyer" June 1949, page 29, gave "Autumn Hints" for 1949: "Horizontal lines ... slim or boxy ... small soft reptiles . . . outside pockets ... leather linings convertible shoulder straps for basic stock." This fabulous Baby Alligator bag was designed to retail at $25.00 by Fishbein & Co. That's equivalent to $189 in inflation adjusted 2006 dollars. That explains why these were the prized possessions of ladies of the time and why these vintage alligator bags are sought after today.
"Luxurious baby alligator in a medium-sized pouch with a covered frame compartment and outside pocket closed with gold stiletto on chain. Both sections are leather lined. Shoe colors."
The "What's New in Handbags" column in the same June 1949 issue herelded a change in Fishbein's fall offerings. ("Handbag Buyer" June 1949, page 49)
Reptile House Adds Smooth Leather
"From Fishbein & Co., long known as specialists in alligator and other reptile bags, comes the announcement that something new will be added to its fall line. For the first time this company will introduce a group of bags in smooth leathers, including a casual series in cowhide. All will be fashioned with customary careful attention to styling and craftsmanship and all will be leather lined."
